In a strategic move to bolster the technical bench ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ghana has appointed veteran Portuguese coach Daniel Gaspar as the new goalkeepers’ trainer for the Black Stars.

The appointment reunites Gaspar with head coach Carlos Queiroz, marking a continuation of a professional partnership that has spanned over three decades.

Gaspar’s transition to the Ghanaian national team was confirmed by his current club, Hartford Athletic.

His arrival brings a wealth of elite international experience, having previously worked alongside Queiroz with the national teams of Portugal, South Africa, and Iran.

During their tenure with Iran, the duo successfully guided the team to the 2014 World Cup and the 2015 AFC Asian Cup quarter-finals.

Beyond his work with Queiroz, Gaspar’s resume includes stints with Portuguese giants Sporting CP and Benfica, as well as a role under Luiz Felipe Scolari during Portugal’s run to the Euro 2004 final.

Most recently, he has been credited with the defensive resurgence of Hartford Athletic, leading them to a USL Jägermeister Cup victory.

The addition of Gaspar is expected to provide critical mentorship for first-choice goalkeeper Benjamin Asare as the team prepares for a formidable challenge on the world stage.

Ghana has been drawn into Group L, where they will face England, Croatia, and Panama.

With the Black Stars set to open their campaign against Panama on June 17, the technical team is under pressure to deliver.

Coach Queiroz, tasked with leading the four-time African champions beyond the group stage for the first time since 2010, views Gaspar as a vital piece in strengthening the squad's defensive organization and goalkeeping reliability.
