Chelsea cash in on Cucurella's world cup glory despite Real Madrid move
Following Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina to claim their second FIFA World Cup title, Chelsea Football Club is set to receive financial compensation through FIFA’s Club Benefits Programme for left-back Marc Cucurella.
Despite Cucurella completing a transfer to Real Madrid during the tournament, FIFA’s regulatory framework dictates that Chelsea remains the sole beneficiary of the payment.
The FIFA Club Benefits Programme is a daily compensation mechanism created to share tournament revenues with clubs that release their players for international duty.
The payout, which is entirely separate from national federation prize money, is calculated on a per-player, per-day basis covering the official preparation period through the day after a team's final match.
This allocation is strictly determined by the squad registration deadline.
Before the tournament kicked off, Spain submitted its official squad list to FIFA, and at that exact deadline, Marc Cucurella was still officially registered as a Chelsea FC player.
Real Madrid only announced the signing of Cucurella on June 15, 2026, well after the tournament had already begun.
This standard FIFA registration cutoff rule exists to maintain clear administrative boundaries and prevent complex financial or legal disputes between buying and selling clubs during major international competitions.
Because Cucurella was in Chelsea’s books at the official tournament deadline, the Blues retain full entitlement to the FIFA compensation generated across his entire World Cup winning run.
