East Africa set for historic joint hosting as 2027 AFCON dates confirmed
The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is officially scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
The tournament window was confirmed during a high-level meeting held ahead of the 76th FIFA Congress in Vancouver.
The decision is part of a broader ratification of the international match calendar, with FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) locking in key competition dates for the next cycle.
A Landmark "Pamoja" Edition
In a historic milestone for the continent, the tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. This "Pamoja" (Swahili for "together") bid marks the first time that the AFCON will be staged across three countries and the first time in five decades that the competition returns to East Africa.
Qualification Roadmap
With the tournament dates secured, attention now turns to the qualifying series.
- Draw: The qualifying draw is expected to take place following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
- Group Stage: The qualification campaign will intensify later this year, with group-stage matches scheduled to run between September and November 2026.
Officials noted that the expanded international window is designed to accommodate a full continental schedule, ensuring national teams have adequate preparation time for the expanded 24-team tournament.
Infrastructure and Logistics
CAF and the three host nations are expected to release further details regarding host cities and specific venues in the coming months. Preparations are already underway across the region to upgrade stadium facilities, transport networks, and hospitality services to meet international standards.
The 2027 edition will follow the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, continuing the tournament's mid-year slot to align with the global football calendar.
