Ghana is set to deepen its involvement in the global Chess for Freedom initiative, fielding an expanded roster of teams for the upcoming Continental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners.

The programme, spearheaded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), utilises chess as a tool for rehabilitation, discipline, and cognitive development within correctional facilities worldwide.

This year’s participation follows a historic milestone for the Ghana Prisons Service.

In the previous edition, the youth team from the Senior Correctional Centre gained international recognition by emerging as continental champions in the youth category.

Building on that momentum, Ghana will now field multiple teams, including the defending youth champions and new competitive squads from both the Nsawam Male and Nsawam Female Prisons.

Local implementation is being managed by the Mentors Chess Academy in partnership with the Ghana Prisons Service.

Officials note that the programme has become a cornerstone of their broader rehabilitation strategy, with inmates showing marked improvements in analytical thinking, patience, and emotional discipline through structured training.

"Chess has proven to be a vital psychological and educational tool," organisers stated, emphasising its role in fostering the problem-solving skills necessary for successful reintegration into society.

The continental qualifiers are scheduled for May.

Successful teams from this round will earn a spot in the prestigious Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners, which is slated to take place in October.
