PSG retain UEFA Champions League title after penalty shootout win over Arsenal
Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League crown on Saturday night after defeating Arsenal F.C. in a tense penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time in Budapest.
The dramatic victory sparked celebrations among PSG players and supporters as the French champions lifted Europe’s most prestigious club trophy for a second consecutive season.
Arsenal made a dream start to the final when Kai Havertz scored in the sixth minute to hand the English side an early lead and boost hopes of a first-ever Champions League title.
The Premier League club maintained control for much of the opening half, frustrating PSG’s attacking lineup and limiting clear scoring opportunities.
However, PSG returned from the break with greater urgency and eventually drew level after Ousmane Dembélé calmly converted a penalty to make it 1-1.
Both teams pushed for a winning goal in regulation time, but neither side could break the deadlock as the match advanced into extra time.
The additional 30 minutes produced several tense moments, with Arsenal searching for a decisive breakthrough while PSG looked dangerous on the counterattack.
Despite the chances created at both ends, the score remained unchanged, forcing the final into penalties.
PSG showed composure from the spot, converting all their penalties under intense pressure, while Arsenal failed to maintain the same level of accuracy, allowing the French side to clinch victory.
PSG manager Luis Enrique praised his players after the match, describing the triumph as a testament to the team’s resilience and unity throughout the campaign.
“This is a special group of players,” he said. “We fought together, suffered together and achieved something incredible together. Winning the Champions League again is an unforgettable feeling.”
The victory further strengthens PSG’s reputation as one of Europe’s dominant football forces and marks another major milestone under Luis Enrique’s leadership.
For Arsenal, the defeat brought an end to an impressive European campaign. Despite the disappointment, the club’s run to the final has been widely viewed as a sign of its return to the top level of European football.
