Queiroz quit Black Stars job over lack of camp base and training facilities, GFA says

Carlos Queiroz's decision to leave his post as Black Stars head coach was partly driven by Ghana's lack of football infrastructure, according to Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum.

"One of the reasons why Carlos Queiroz has left his role is the lack of infrastructure in the country," Asante Twum told Kessben FM.

He said Queiroz was surprised to learn that the Black Stars have no dedicated camp base for training. According to Asante Twum, Queiroz said he had never before encountered a national team without one, and was disappointed that the team trains at the same venue where it plays. Queiroz believed this affected the team and made it difficult to maintain a proper pitch.

"The situation is that we have only one approved stadium, and he gave a scientific basis for his reasons," Asante Twum said.

Ghana has lost both of its opening Group C qualifiers and sits bottom of the group without a point. The Black Stars were beaten 2-0 by Ivory Coast in Bouake, then lost 4-2 to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium after surrendering a two-goal lead. The results have put Ghana's hopes of reaching the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) under significant pressure.

A five-member committee has been formed to oversee the search for a new head coach. Its report is due to be submitted to the Sports Ministry on 9 October.

Ghana's next qualifiers are a double-header against Somalia in October, with both matches set for the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars are seeking to return to the continental tournament after failing to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. The 2027 edition will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
