'Tell England we are coming' – Sam George credits Carlos Queiroz’s tactics for Ghana’s World Cup opener win
Ningo Prampram Member of Parliament (MP) Sam George has stated in Parliament that Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opening fixture proves that the team's historical struggles were rooted in a lack of tactical leadership on the bench.
Reflecting on the match, the lawmaker contrasted a difficult opening period with the technical turnaround orchestrated by head coach Carlos Queiroz in the second half.
"The changes he made, the effect it had on the game — that is something we have lacked for a few years," Sam George observed.
"And I am happy to see that today we have a coach who can change the game mid-game with his tactical formation."
Tactical Shifts and Key Substitutions
The game itself reflected a tale of two halves. Panama clearly dominated the early stages of the encounter but were repeatedly denied by the performance of Ghanaian goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi.
The match turned on key personnel changes implemented by Queiroz, which included substituting team captain Jordan Ayew off the pitch. The tactical adjustments paid off deep into stoppage time. In the 95th minute, Antoine Semenyo (11) found substitute forward Brandon Thomas-Asante (10), who provided the vital assist for Caleb Yirenkyi (3) to strike the late winner.
Warning Sent to Group L Leaders England
Citing Ghana’s historic footballing pedigree, Sam George reminded Parliament of the Black Stars' capacity to confront global football powerhouses.
He recalled past tournament performances where Ghana successfully took on top-ranked nations, including the Czech Republic when they were ranked number two in the world, and the United States when they held the number five spot.
The lawmaker stated that these historical reference points serve as a warning ahead of next week Tuesday's highly anticipated Group L clash against England.
"And so tell England that we are coming," he declared.
