Health Ministry launches Gavi five-year audit mission to strengthen immunisation transition

The Ministry of Health has launched the Gavi Five-Year Programme Audit Planning and Scoping Mission to review Ghana’s immunisation programme and support a smooth transition as the country prepares to graduate from Gavi support by 2029.
Delivering a welcome address on behalf of the Chief Director, Mr. Frank Raji, Director of General Administration, underscored Ghana’s long-standing partnership with Gavi since 2006.
He noted that between January 2020 and December 2024, Ghana received wide-ranging support from Gavi, including vaccine supplies, cold chain upgrades, technical assistance, and pandemic response measures.
These interventions, he said, have helped boost immunisation coverage, strengthen health systems, and protect millions from vaccine-preventable diseases.
Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working with Gavi and other stakeholders to ensure sustainable immunisation financing and service delivery after the transition.
She described the audit as an important opportunity to demonstrate accountability, reinforce systems, and build stronger trust with partners.
Dr. Ayensu-Danquah also expressed gratitude to Gavi and development partners for their consistent support, while calling for collective action to consolidate the progress achieved in Ghana’s national immunisation programme.
Leading the Gavi Audit Team, Ms. Charity Tusiime explained that the mission would focus on transparency, sustainability, and readiness for transition.
The review, she said, will assess governance structures, supply chain systems, financial management, and immunisation data—drawing on lessons from other countries that have successfully completed similar transitions.
