2026 U-20 WWCQ: Black Princesses best South Africa 1:0 to make final round, Uganda next
Ghana’s U20 women’s team will face Uganda in the final round of the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers after both sides secured aggregate victories in the third round of the campaign.
The Black Princesses advanced following a hard-fought tie against South Africa women's national under-20 football team.
Head coach Charles Sampson reshuffled his starting lineup, introducing Juliana Gyekyewaa, Precious Asante, Latifa Abesik and Mary Amponsah.
Ghana dominated early exchanges and created several openings but found the South African defence difficult to break down.
Goalkeeper Jenna Sarpong was also called into action at the other end and delivered crucial saves to keep the tie level heading into halftime.
After the break, an injury to Mary Amponsah forced a change, with Priscilla Mensah coming off the bench.
The substitution proved decisive, as Mensah struck 18 minutes after her introduction to score the only goal of the game.
South Africa pushed late for an equaliser, but Ghana held firm to secure the win and book their place in the final round.
Uganda also progressed after overcoming Zambia women's national under-20 football team. The East Africans were held to a 1-1 draw at home in the first leg but secured qualification with a 1-0 away victory in the return encounter.
The upcoming clash sets up a decisive battle between Ghana and Uganda for a place at the global tournament, with one of four slots allocated to Africa at stake.
The Black Princesses are aiming to maintain their consistent presence on the world stage, chasing an eighth consecutive appearance at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup since making their debut in 2010.
The two-legged final phase fixture is scheduled for May.
