B5 Plus Company Limited has presented a GH¢400 million tax cheque to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) with the Authority calling on businesses and individuals to take greater responsibility for financing Ghana’s development. 

The presentation highlights the role of corporate tax compliance in strengthening domestic revenue mobilisation as Ghana seeks to reduce its reliance on borrowing and external assistance. 

B5 Plus, an iron and steel manufacturing company chaired by Mukesh Thakwani, is among businesses contributing to the country’s revenue through their operations and tax obligations.

Speaking at the presentation, Commissioner of the GRA’s Domestic Tax Revenue Division, Dr. Martin Kolbil Yamborigya, commended B5 Plus for its tax compliance and urged other businesses and individuals to emulate the company.

“The taxes paid by B5 Plus are not simply figures on a tax statement. They represent a contribution towards the provision of roads, schools, hospitals, security, social interventions and other public services that benefit all of us,” he said.

Dr. Yamborigya said a stronger domestic revenue base was essential to sustaining national development and reducing Ghana’s dependence on borrowing and external support.

He, however, stressed that the responsibility for effective use of public resources rests with government.

“Government has a responsibility to use public resources efficiently and accountably,” he emphasised.

He advised that the GRA must continue to administer Ghana’s tax laws fairly, efficiently and professionally to build public confidence in the tax system.

The Commissioner also urged taxpayers to maintain proper records, file accurate tax returns on time and pay the correct taxes.

He also appealed to consumers to help curb revenue leakages by requesting VAT invoices when making applicable purchases.

“When you pay VAT, ask for your VAT invoice,” he said.

Dr. Yamborigya further called on the media to support public education on taxation and promote scrutiny of the tax system.

He assured taxpayers that the GRA remained committed to making tax compliance easier, fairer and more convenient.
