FLEGT initiative key to curbing illegal lumber practices – Forestry Commission

The Forestry Commission has described the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance, and Trade (FLEGT) initiative as a major milestone in Ghana’s efforts to promote sustainable forestry.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Mr Elikem Kotoko, said the initiative is playing a crucial role in tackling illegal lumber activities within the forestry sector.
He explained that FLEGT provides a framework to ensure transparency, accountability, and proper regulation of the timber trade for export to Europe, while safeguarding Ghana’s forests for future generations.
According to him, the initiative not only strengthens forest governance but also helps boost the credibility of Ghana’s timber exports on the international market.
Mr. Kotoko reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to working with stakeholders to fully implement the programme and ensure the elimination of illegal logging and related practices.
