Ghana and Boeing have discussed the potential establishment of a regional Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) hub in Ghana as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s aviation industry.

The discussions took place between President John Dramani Mahama and senior executives of Boeing on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The proposed MRO hub would serve airlines operating across West Africa and the wider African continent.

The discussions form part of broader engagements between Ghana and Boeing on the country’s plans to restore its national airline.

The meeting followed earlier engagements initiated by Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, and his team, including a visit to Boeing.

President Mahama said Ghana’s interest in working with Boeing goes beyond acquiring aircraft.

“Ghana does not want its relationship with Boeing to be defined simply by the purchase of aircraft. We want a strategic partnership that helps us build an aviation ecosystem — creating skilled jobs, transferring technology, strengthening our industrial base and positioning Ghana as an aviation and logistics hub for West Africa,” he said.

The proposed MRO facility was among the priority areas discussed, alongside national carrier and fleet development.

The discussions also covered aviation training, skills development, technology transfer and the creation of high-value employment opportunities for young Ghanaians.
