Gold Fields has reaffirmed its commitment to Ghana as it prepares for the transition of the Damang Mine to government ownership in April 2026.

In a media release issued in Johannesburg on March 25, the company said preparations for the handover are progressing steadily in line with an agreement reached with the Government of Ghana.

Under the arrangement, Gold Fields was granted a 12-month extension of its mining lease to facilitate a smooth and orderly transition, with the official transfer of ownership scheduled for April 18, 2026.

The company noted that mining operations at Damang resumed in May 2025 as part of efforts to sustain production during the transition period.

It also completed a detailed feasibility study in December 2025 to support the long-term viability of the mine under future ownership.

Gold Fields said it has worked closely with the Government of Ghana and a designated Transition Team over the past year to ensure the mine remains operational and sustainable beyond the handover.

The company emphasised that the transition process is aimed at safeguarding jobs, supporting host communities, and maintaining the mine’s contribution to the national economy.

With over three decades of operations in Ghana, Gold Fields highlighted its significant economic impact, including investments of approximately $5 billion in the Damang and Tarkwa mines since 2000, and contributions of about $2.9 billion in taxes, royalties, and dividends to the state.

The company currently employs more than 7,000 people in Ghana, with 99 percent of its workforce being Ghanaian.

It has also invested over $100 million in community development projects, including health, education, and infrastructure.

Chief Executive Officer Mike Fraser reiterated Ghana’s importance to the company’s global operations, expressing optimism about maintaining strong partnerships with the government and local communities.

Gold Fields added that while it remains committed to supporting a smooth transition, decisions regarding the future ownership and management of the Damang Mine rest solely with the Government of Ghana in accordance with the country’s mining laws.
