Gov't commits to rehabilitation of Tono and Vea dams to boost irrigation farming
During the visit, Dr. Otokunor visited the offices of ICOUR and engaged Water User Associations operating around both the Tono and Vea dams.
The engagements focused on irrigation farming, challenges affecting the schemes, and government’s plans to improve agricultural productivity in the region.
He indicated that the Tono and Vea dams together have the capacity to irrigate more than 3,000 hectares of land used for the cultivation of crops including rice and tomatoes.
Addressing farmers and managers of the irrigation schemes, Dr. Otokunor assured them of government’s commitment to accelerating rehabilitation works on the facilities to improve water supply and enhance farming activities.
He said the planned interventions would include desilting sections of the reservoirs to ensure optimum service delivery to farmers within the enclave.
According to him, the rehabilitation forms part of broader government efforts to strengthen agribusiness, improve food production, and support livelihoods in farming communities across the country.
