MP assures cocoa farmers of sector revitalization under next NDC gov't
The Member of Parliament for Sefwi Bodi Constituency, Mr. Samson Ahi, has assured cocoa farmers that the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, under John Dramani Mahama, will restore the cocoa sector to its former glory.
Speaking at Elluokrom in the Bia West Constituency during the Western North Regional campaign tour of NDC Vice Presidential candidate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Mr. Ahi accused the current government of exploiting cocoa farmers by paying them inadequate producer prices compared to the significant world market price of cocoa.
He recalled that during the Mahama administration, cocoa farmers received 70 percent of the world market price as their producer price, along with additional benefits such as free fertilizer, cocoa roads, and other incentives aimed at supporting the sector.
Mr. Ahi pledged that the next NDC government would offer cocoa farmers a fair and competitive producer price, while reintroducing the free fertilizer programme and supplying improved seedlings to boost yields.
He further revealed plans for the NDC to introduce a pension scheme for cocoa farmers, ensuring financial security for them when they retire.
He urged the electorate to vote for the NDC in the upcoming December 7 general elections, stressing that a Mahama-led administration would revive the cocoa industry and prevent the collapse of the Ghana Cocoa Board.
