The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) say no decision has been taken to increase public transport fares.

In a joint statement, the two transport groups said consultations with the Ministry of Transport on the review of public transport fares for the 2026 fare window formally began on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The unions presented a proposal for an upward review of transport fares during the meeting.

The Ministry, however, briefed them on prevailing economic conditions and measures to stabilise the Ghana cedi, as well as the GHS2.00 per litre intervention on diesel prices.

According to the unions, the fuel intervention is intended to cushion transport operators and passengers.

Both sides agreed that the impact of the fuel intervention on operating costs, together with the proposed fare increase, required further discussions before a decision could be made.

A team comprising representatives of the Ministry of Transport, the GPRTU and the GRTCC has subsequently been formed to review all cost inputs.

“No decision to adjust transport fares has been taken,” the statement said.

The unions said the outcome of the review would be communicated to the public in due course.

They also assured the public that existing approved transport fares remain in force across the country.

They urged drivers, station masters and transport owners to continue charging the current approved fares until further notice.

The GPRTU and GRTCC further called on drivers, transport operators and passengers to remain calm and cooperate as the review process continues.
