The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has cautioned the public to ensure that filled LPG cylinders are transported safely, preferably in an upright position, to prevent accidents.

According to the Authority, improper handling can cause over-pressurisation, which may damage the pressure relief valve and result in gas leaks or explosions.

Speaking during an LPG safety campaign at tertiary institutions in the Upper West Region, Head of Consumer Services at the NPA, Eunice Budu Nyarko, stressed the need for consumers to prioritise safety in the use of petroleum products.

“Ignoring safety measures could result in fire outbreaks at homes and workplaces, leading to the loss of lives, injuries, and damage to property,” she warned.

Mrs. Budu Nyarko also urged motorists to always confirm the type of fuel they are purchasing at filling stations, noting the importance of checking colour-coded fuel nozzles: Red for petrol (Super), Black for diesel, and Green for high-octane (RON 95).

On his part, Abraham Dauda, NPA’s Upper West Regional Supervisor for Inspections and Monitoring, advised students to avoid using mobile phones while cooking and to strictly adhere to safety protocols.

Meanwhile, Prof. Hamidatu Saaka Darimani, Vice Chancellor of Dr. Hilla Liman Technical University, proposed that Ghana adopt Burkina Faso’s model of purchasing LPG cylinders only from licensed outlets.

This, she explained, would help prevent consumers from buying substandard or repainted cylinders.

While commending the NPA’s sensitisation campaign, Prof. Darimani emphasised that safety should go beyond fire prevention and include a broader understanding of risks linked to negligence.
