State-controlled enterprises lag behind private sector in profitability – Eric Bonsu Agyabeng
The Head of the Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Division at the State Interests and Governance Authority, Eric Bonsu Agyabeng, has revealed that privately controlled entities are outperforming businesses fully controlled by the state in profitability.
Presenting the 2025 State Ownership Report, Mr Agyabeng noted that 34 of the 53 State-Owned Enterprises recorded profit after tax, while 19 reported losses.
He contrasted this with the performance of entities with stronger private-sector control, which, according to him, recorded higher profitability in proportion to their portfolio.
“The entities that the state controls are unable to report more net profit. But the entities that the private sector controls are able to report more net profit in proportion to the portfolio.”
Mr Agyabeng said the findings highlight the need for stronger performance from wholly state-owned enterprises, particularly because such entities are commercially oriented and expected to generate profits and dividends for government.
