Family feud puts Daddy Lumba’s celebration of life in tatters
Tensions within the family of the late Ghanaian highlife icon Daddy Lumba have come to the surface as preparations for a planned “Celebration of Life” event face legal opposition.
The two-day event, scheduled for March 28–29 at Independence Square, is intended by some relatives and close associates to honour the legendary musician’s lasting impact on Ghana’s music industry.
Figures, including Papa Shee and members of Lumba’s maternal family, insist the gathering is a tribute rather than a funeral.
However, the family head, Kofi Owusu, has challenged the event in court, filing an injunction on the grounds that it effectively constitutes a second funeral.
The case was heard at the Accra High Court on March 25 but has been postponed to April 23, casting doubt over whether the planned ceremony will proceed.
According to the family’s legal representative, the disagreement is not about whether to honour the late star, but about the manner in which it should be done.
He noted that while the court may interpret the gathering as a funeral, some family members view it purely as a celebration of Lumba’s life, legacy, and personal relationships
