GHAMRO's royalties sharing is questionable- Shasha Marley

Legendary Roots Reggae icon Shasha Marley has raised concerns about the fairness of royalty distribution by the Ghana Music Rights Organisation(GHAMRO), describing the current system as questionable.

According to him, the institution lacks a reliable monitoring system to accurately track music usage.

In an Interview on Sunshine with NYA on Accra-based CTV, he noted that, unlike in the past when stations like GBC properly logged music play, many radio and TV stations today do not maintain such records.

“When I was growing up, radio stations were logging music play.

These days, they don’t “, he stressed.

Other Ghanaian industry voices have, over the years, raised concerns about the inconsistencies, highlighting delays in payments as an ongoing challenge within the system.

Shasha Marley believes royalties are now largely influenced by which artists are trending or viral, rather than actual airplay. He added that despite enjoying significant airplay across several regions in Ghana, his works are often not captured in royalty assessments.

“I can tell you that I’m getting serious airplay in the Bono region, the North, the Western region…”, he asserted.

He also used the opportunity to advise young musicians to prioritise education as a tool to enhance their craft and navigate the industry more effectively.

“My father wanted me to be a lawyer. Sometimes I wish I had gone to school a little more.

But then, I’m glad I can read to understand”, he added.

Sunshine with NYA, hosted by NYA The Brand,  is a platform dedicated to highlighting the contributions and impact that individuals are making locally and globally.

The show airs on CTV every Sunday at 8 pm.
