Music duo Lali X Lola have formally appealed to the organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards to reinstate the “Group of the Year” category, following its reported omission from this year’s nominations.

In a letter dated March 17, 2026, and addressed to the TGMA Board in Accra, the duo expressed concern over the decision, arguing that the removal of the category could negatively impact the growth and sustainability of music groups in Ghana.

According to Lali X Lola, while they understand the Board’s possible reasoning—that there may not be enough qualifying groups to sustain the category—the absence of the award may actually worsen the situation.

They described this as a “chicken-and-egg” problem, suggesting that eliminating the category could discourage the formation and development of music groups.

The duo emphasised the importance of award schemes like the TGMA in not only recognising excellence but also shaping the direction of the music industry.

They noted that maintaining the “Group of the Year” category encourages collaboration, supports creative diversity, and promotes long-term investment in group acts.

“Music groups bring a unique dynamic to the industry—blending diverse talents, fostering collaboration, and creating memorable cultural moments,” the statement said.

“Their presence enriches Ghana’s music landscape and strengthens its global appeal.”

Lali X Lola further argued that without recognition platforms, group acts may struggle to compete with solo artists, who often have more visibility and support.

They warned that removing the category could discourage emerging talents from forming groups, thereby limiting diversity within the industry.

The duo is therefore calling on the TGMA Board to reconsider its decision and restore the category, stressing that such a move would not only support existing groups but also inspire new ones.

They concluded by expressing hope that their concerns would be taken into account as the Board continues to promote the growth and recognition of Ghanaian music
