Gomoa Central Member of Parliament (MP) Kwame Asare Obeng, commonly known as A-Plus, has accused the police of giving a false account of the violent clash between residents of Gomoa Oguaakrom and New Winneba in the Central Region.

A-Plus disputed the police claim that residents of Gomoa Oguaakrom entered New Winneba armed with guns, demanding evidence to support the allegation.

"The police stated that the Gomoa people came with guns. Where is the evidence? Where is the evidence? Do you have any evidence to support that claim that Gomoa people came with guns to attack anybody?" he asked on Citi FM's Eyewitness News on Wednesday, September 2.

He instead accused police of opening fire on residents, alleging that two people were killed and 19 injured.

"The police came there, shot and injured 19 people, and killed two. Where did the police come from? They got a call from somewhere, and I suspect that it was a higher authority. They were given express orders. They were killed by police," he alleged.

He further alleged that one victim was shot dead about two kilometres from the main scene of the confrontation.

"When the guy moved, he just shot him in public. Shot and killed him there, point-blank. He has not been arrested," he alleged.

A-Plus also accused police of using excessive force, referencing an earlier incident in which a Christian leader was assaulted by a Muslim man while in police custody.

"If somebody can go to the police headquarters, attack a suspect, beat him in the presence of police at the police headquarters, and the next day, the only thing they did was peace," he said.

The clash reportedly followed a longstanding land dispute between Gomoa Oguaakrom and New Winneba. Police reports have put the death toll at three, with between 15 and 17 people injured. Additional personnel, checkpoints and patrols have since been deployed to the area, with several arrests reportedly made.

A-Plus maintained that the underlying land dispute must be resolved through lawful means, while condemning the use of firearms and other weapons.
