About 11 schoolchildren injured, one in ICU, after tipper truck crashes into bus on Dzorwulu–Accra Mall road
A tipper truck crashed into a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus carrying schoolchildren on the Dzorwulu–Accra Mall stretch on Thursday, injuring several lower primary pupils.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said about 11 children were on board the bus, returning from a school excursion, when the crash occurred.
Eyewitnesses said one child is currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Police Hospital, while the remaining 10 are being treated at 37 Military Hospital.
Assistant Divisional Officer I (ADO I) Alex King Nartey of the GNFS said the tipper truck rammed into the rear of the bus, though the cause of the crash is yet to be established.
"This is the Fiesta Royale to Accra Mall stretch, where a tipper truck has run into a minibus containing children," he said.
Describing the scene, he said: "It looks like it is a Sprinter bus that was containing school children. It is believed that they had gone for an excursion, and this is the level of the impact."
He said personnel from the GNFS National Headquarters Rescue Team were deployed to the scene to assess the situation and separate the two vehicles.
Images of the scene showed extensive damage to both vehicles, blood stains inside the bus, and a child's school bag left behind.
Authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of casualties or the condition of the injured children, and it remains unclear whether any fatalities have been recorded.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
