Akosombo Hydroelectric Power Station nears full capacity as fifth unit returns to service

Ghana’s energy recovery has entered its final stages following the successful restoration of the fifth-generation unit at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Power Station.

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, confirmed the milestone on Thursday, April 30, via his official social media channels.

This development follows a fire at the GRIDCo substation earlier this week that damaged the control room, crippled evacuation capacity, and caused widespread blackouts.

The commissioning of the fifth unit brings the plant’s operational capacity to approximately 85%, significantly boosting the national generation pool to eliminate the deficit caused by the blaze.

Minister Jinapor noted that the startup was executed smoothly through coordinated teamwork, emphasising that the restoration is a critical step toward providing a stable and reliable power supply for domestic and industrial users.

Engineers from the Volta River Authority and GRIDCo achieved this restoration by bypassing damaged control systems and synchronizing the turbines back onto the high-voltage transmission line.

While energy analysts and the Minority in Parliament initially questioned the government's crisis management, the steady restoration of units suggests the situation is being stabilized.

Technical teams are now focused on restoring the sixth and final unit to return the facility to its full 1,020MW capacity.
