American civil rights leader Al Sharpton has met with Ghanaian traditional and political leaders as part of ongoing global discussions on justice and accountability for the transatlantic slave trade.

The meeting brought together Kwasi Kyei Darkwah, Ghana's Special Envoy to the Caribbean and Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, focusing on the historical impact of the trafficking and enslavement of Africans, which participants described as one of the gravest crimes against humanity.

The engagement forms part of broader efforts to advance international conversations on reparations, historical justice and the lasting effects of slavery on African and diaspora communities.

Mr Sharpton expressed appreciation for the opportunity to participate in the discussions, noting the importance of sustained global engagement on the issue.

The civil rights activist is expected to continue the conversation at the United Nations, where further deliberations on justice and reparatory measures are anticipated.

He is also scheduled to meet with President John Dramani Mahama as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration between Ghana and international stakeholders on the matter.

Participants underscored the need for continued advocacy and dialogue, stressing that efforts toward justice and recognition of historical injustices must remain a global priority.
