Appoint Brogya Genfi as Defence Minister now – Yaw Opoku Mensah
Yaw Opoku Mensah, a member of the Communications Team of the New Patriotic Party, is mounting pressure on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately confirm Ernest Brogya Genfi as substantive Minister for Defence, insisting that the current interim arrangement is unsustainable.
His demand comes in the aftermath of the 6 August 2025 Ghana Air Force helicopter crash, which killed then Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and several senior government officials, leaving leadership of the Ministry of Defence Ghana under acting oversight.
Since the tragedy, Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson has been overseeing defence responsibilities alongside his substantive role at the Ministry of Finance.
Yaw Opoku Mensah argues that this dual arrangement risks weakening coordination and decision-making within the security sector at a critical time.
He maintains that Ernest Brogya Genfi is well-suited for the position, citing his hands-on experience, maturity in handling defence-related responsibilities, and institutional memory of the ministry, which he says makes him ideal for the role.
He argues that unlike a new appointee who would need time to adapt, Brogya Genfi already understands the structures and operations of the Ministry of Defence, making him better positioned to provide immediate and effective leadership.
