NACOC intercepts 5 million tapentadol tablets in major anti-drug operation
The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has intercepted a 40-foot trailer carrying 5 million tablets of Tapentadol 250mg in an intelligence-led operation.
The consignment, reportedly en route to the Niger, was seized during a coordinated exercise. Authorities say the interception is among the largest pharmaceutical drug seizures recorded in recent times and has raised concerns about illicit drug trafficking within the sub-region.
Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the shipment and are currently assisting with investigations. NACOC said the suspects are believed to be linked to a wider network involved in the cross-border movement of controlled substances.
The identities of the suspects have not yet been disclosed, but officials indicate that further arrests may follow as investigations continue.
Tapentadol is a regulated opioid due to its potential for abuse and dependency. NACOC said it will intensify surveillance and enforcement measures to curb the trafficking of such substances.
The Commission added that it is working with international partners to trace the origin and intended distribution channels of the seized consignment as efforts continue to dismantle the network behind the operation.
