Ghana urges against retaliatory attacks on South African businesses amid xenophobic tensions
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a formal condemnation of ongoing xenophobic hostilities in South Africa, while simultaneously appealing to the Ghanaian public to avoid retaliatory attacks against South African businesses.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa summoned the Acting South African High Commissioner, Mr. Thando Dalamba, on Thursday, April 23, 2026, to officially register Ghana’s displeasure regarding reports of intimidation and harassment targeting foreign nationals.
Despite the circulation of provocative viral videos depicting vigilante groups targeting Ghanaians, Mr. Ablakwa emphasized the need for a mature diplomatic response to maintain continental stability. He urged Ghanaians to resist targeting South African commercial interests within Ghana, stating that the nation must "rise above" the situation and show leadership through restraint.
During an interview on TV3 on Saturday, April 25, the Minister noted that the government has received high-level security briefings indicating that South African law enforcement is managing the situation. He confirmed that authorities have begun investigations and have invited several individuals for questioning.
In his remarks, Mr. Ablakwa criticized the perpetrators for a lack of historical perspective, reminding them of the pivotal role played by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Ghana’s sacrifices during the anti-apartheid struggle. He noted that the very people being attacked today are those who supported South Africa’s liberation, describing the harassment as contrary to the principles of African unity.
The Ministry’s formal protest has demanded immediate and decisive steps from the South African government to ensure the protection of Ghanaian citizens and to prevent further escalation. While no Ghanaian fatalities or injuries have been recorded in the current wave of unrest, the Minister advised all Ghanaians in South Africa to remain indoors until the security situation is fully neutralized.
Acting High Commissioner Thando Dalamba assured the Ministry that the South African government is actively addressing the matter and that law enforcement agencies are monitoring flashpoints to restore order and hold perpetrators accountable. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded by pledging to continue high-level engagements until the safety of Ghanaians abroad is fully guaranteed.
