Bank of Ghana halts proposed 0.75% MoMo-to-Bank transfer charges
The Bank of Ghana has directed Mobile Money Fintech Limited to suspend the planned introduction of a 0.75 per cent charge on direct wallet-to-bank transfers pending further stakeholder consultations.
The proposed fee, which was expected to take effect from June 1, 2026, has been put on hold to allow for broader engagement and review.
The announcement of the charge by MMFL had sparked public debate, with concerns raised over its possible impact on digital transactions, mobile money usage and financial inclusion.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the central bank said the decision reflects efforts to ensure fairness within the mobile financial services sector while safeguarding the interests of consumers.
According to the Bank of Ghana, any adjustment to charges within the mobile money ecosystem must be carefully considered to protect users and support their financial wellbeing.
The central bank, however, did not indicate when the consultation process would end or whether the proposed charges would eventually be amended, approved or withdrawn.
