C/R: Baifikrom declared safe after chlorine gas leak at water treatment plant
The Central Regional Disaster Management Committee has declared Baifikrom and nearby communities safe following a chlorine gas leak at the Baifikrom Water Treatment Plant.
Officials say the quick response at the site helped neutralise the gas and prevented any harm to residents.
Speaking to Citi News, Central Regional Environmental Health Officer William Freeman Goku confirmed that experts successfully contained the situation.
He added that no health hazards have been recorded so far, though ongoing surveillance measures will monitor for potential long-term effects.
The Central Regional Fire Command also reported no environmental impact and has concluded operations at the plant.
Central Regional Fire Officer ACFOII Mary Atiga Mensah reassured residents, stating, “The situation is under total control. Residents have no cause for alarm. Any significant chlorine exposure would show effects within 30 minutes to an hour, such as changes to plant leaves. Since the leaves remain green, there’s no reason for concern.”
