Community Service Bill: Parliament suspends sitting over lack of quorum

News
Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Apiagyei,

Parliament suspended sitting on Monday, June 1, after the House failed to meet the required quorum to continue its business.

The decision followed a brief sitting in which proceedings were suspended for 30 minutes to allow Members of Parliament to reorganise and muster the numbers needed to continue deliberations.

Before the suspension, the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, had moved for a variation of the order of business, requesting that questions scheduled for the day be deferred to allow the relevant minister more time to prepare. He also urged the House to proceed with consideration of the Community Service Bill under item 31.

However, the Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Apiagyei, objected to proceeding immediately, citing the absence of members of the relevant committee on her side of the House. She instead proposed a short suspension of sitting to allow MPs to assemble.

Following consultations with leadership on both sides, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, agreed to suspend proceedings for 30 minutes.

Earlier in the sitting, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament oversaw the adoption of the Votes and Proceedings and Official Reports from previous sittings before business was disrupted.
