The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, has announced a nationwide enforcement exercise targeting the use of outdated dealer plates and expired documentation.

Beginning Tuesday, March 24, 2026, the joint operation, led by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), will clamp down on motorists still using 2025 DV plates and expired DP stickers.

The directive follows the official rollout of the 2026 DV plates, which the DVLA says automatically invalidates the continued use of the previous year’s plates and any expired DP stickers.

The authority recalled that in 2025, it granted a temporary extension for the use of 2025 DV plates and DP stickers due to operational challenges in producing new plates. That interim measure, however, ended earlier this year.

On February 4, 2026, the DVLA formally announced the release and issuance of the 2026 DV plates to eligible applicants, including motor traders, fleet operators, and licensed dealers who had applied after a public call for applications in November 2025.

According to the DVLA, any continued use of the 2025 DV plates or expired DP stickers now constitutes a violation of the law.

The authority further emphasized that the use of dealer plates is governed by Regulation 23 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), which clearly outlines the categories of individuals and entities permitted to operate such plates.

It warned that vehicle owners who do not fall within these specified categories must ensure their vehicles are properly registered before putting them on the road.

The DVLA and the Ghana Police Service have urged all motorists to comply with the directive to avoid sanctions as enforcement begins.
