Fraud crackdown: Sam George warns against registering SIM cards for others

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has cautioned Ghanaians against registering SIM cards on behalf of other individuals, warning of serious consequences if such SIMs are linked to fraudulent activities.

According to the minister, individuals who allow their Ghana Card details to be used for SIM registration risk having their identification flagged or even blocked if the SIM cards are later used for mobile money fraud.

“If a SIM card registered under your Ghana Card is linked to mobile money fraud, your card will be flagged and potentially blocked. Do not register for anybody; everyone has a Ghana Card, let them go and register themselves,” he stated.

Speaking to the media on March 17, 2026, Mr George explained that the government is intensifying efforts to sanitise the telecommunications sector and clamp down on fraud, particularly within mobile money transactions.

He warned that where a single Ghana Card is used to register multiple SIM cards involved in fraudulent activities, authorities may block the card entirely, preventing the individual from registering new SIMs in the future.

The minister advised citizens to only register SIM cards for themselves or, where necessary, for their dependants, stressing that accountability will be strictly enforced under the new system.

As part of the upcoming SIM registration exercise, he disclosed that a liveliness test will be introduced to verify identities and reduce impersonation and fraudulent registrations. This measure is expected to expose individuals who may have acquired SIM cards through illegitimate means, as the system will flag suspicious data during verification.

Mr George assured the public that the government remains committed to strengthening the security and integrity of Ghana’s telecommunications infrastructure.

He further urged law-abiding citizens to comply fully with the registration requirements, while warning that individuals engaged in mobile money fraud will face strict sanctions, including the blocking of their SIM cards.
