The Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has called for a renewed focus on strict discipline within the Ghana Armed Forces, describing it as essential for improving performance and responding effectively to evolving security threats.

Addressing participants at the opening of the General Headquarters Retreat 2026 in Accra on March 23, he stressed that professionalism in the military must be anchored on discipline, respect for command structures, and adherence to established standards.

Lt Gen Agyapong cautioned that the changing global and regional security landscape presents increasingly complex challenges, including hybrid warfare, extremism, cyber threats, misinformation, and organised cross-border crime. He noted that addressing these threats requires a force that is both flexible and firmly grounded in order and discipline.

He emphasised that the Armed Forces must remain proactive and forward-thinking to maintain their effectiveness in the face of these emerging risks.

The four-day retreat, taking place from March 23 to 26 at Burma Camp and Mampong-Akuapem, is aimed at strengthening unity, resilience, and a culture of discipline within the military.

He also underscored the need for closer coordination among the Army, Navy and Air Force, highlighting joint planning and cooperation as critical to operational success.

Additionally, he called for enhanced collaboration between the military and other state agencies to build a more cohesive national security system, while encouraging the adoption of innovation and technology to better tackle future challenges.
