Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his bold leadership in championing the recognition of the transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity on the global stage.

Speaking at the Jubilee Lounge during a reception to welcome the President back from his United States engagement, Mr Debrah said Ghana continues to uphold a legacy of courage and leadership that dates back to the country’s founding.

He referenced Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, noting that his role in the African liberation struggle set a precedent for the nation’s continued influence in global affairs.

“When Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah led the African liberation struggle, he made Ghana proud. Today, that same spirit of courage and leadership is being demonstrated again,” he said.

A Bold and Courageous Leader

Mr Debrah described President Mahama as a leader chosen at a critical moment to advance Africa’s interests on the international stage, particularly in the push for reparatory justice.

He said the President’s efforts at the United Nations, including advocating for the formal recognition of slavery as the gravest crime against humanity and calling for reparations, reflect exceptional leadership and commitment.

“When the moment came for bold and courageous leadership, Africa found it in President John Dramani Mahama,” he stated.

The Chief of Staff also paid tribute to the president’s personal legacy, noting that his late father, Emmanuel Adama Mahama, would be proud of his achievements.

National Pride and Recognition

Mr Debrah expressed pride on behalf of the government and the Ghanaian people, applauding the President for elevating Ghana’s voice on the global stage once again.

“On behalf of the government, the presidency, and the good people of Ghana, we welcome you home and we are proud of you,” he said.

He concluded by thanking President Mahama for what he described as restoring Ghana’s leadership role internationally and advancing the cause of justice for people of African descent worldwide.
