President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his deep respect for Lincoln University, even after the institution cancelled its plan to award him an honorary doctorate.

The university is said to have withdrawn the honour shortly before the planned ceremony, citing concerns raised by sections of its community over the President’s perceived stance on LGBTQ-related matters.

Speaking to the Ghanaian diaspora in Philadelphia on Thursday, March 26, President Mahama said the situation would not lessen the institution’s importance to Ghana.

He also pointed to the university’s historic contribution to Ghana, particularly its role in educating Kwame Nkrumah.

President Mahama added that the enduring ties between Ghana and the university would remain intact despite the current developments.

“Whatever disagreements have arisen, Lincoln University holds a special place in my heart,” he said.

“It is where our first President was nurtured intellectually and grounded in his Pan-Africanist struggle. It remains hallowed ground for Ghanaians,” he stated.

“We cannot separate Lincoln University from Ghana’s story, and we will continue to hold it in the highest regard,” he added.
