GIFEC Ghana engages Huawei at Mobile World congress to strengthen rural connectivity in Ghana
At the 2026 edition of the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona Spain, on 5th March 2026, the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications(GIFEC) held a high-level meeting with global technology leader Huawei to discuss strategies aimed at strengthening rural telephony services across Ghana.
The GIFEC delegation, led by the Administrator/CEO, Mr. Tanko Rashid-Computer, included the Director of Corporate Affairs, Ms. Francisca Adjei. On the other hand, the Huawei delegation was headed by Li Junfeng, Vice President of Huawei and Chief Executive Officer of the company’s Global Public Sector Business Unit, alongside Mlungisi Nhlapo, who serves as Huawei’s Advisory Product Manager.
The meeting focused on exploring innovative technological solutions to support the expansion and improvement of GIFEC’s Rural Telephony Project, a key initiative designed to extend telecommunications infrastructure and digital connectivity to underserved and unserved communities across Ghana.
During the engagement, the Huawei team presented a range of advanced rural telephony solutions, including the latest version of their Rural Telephony Project (RTP) masts. These modern telecommunications masts are designed to enhance connectivity in remote areas by providing reliable network infrastructure capable of supporting improved voice and data services. The Huawei team further demonstrated how these upgraded systems could help strengthen network quality and expand coverage in rural communities.
The presentation provided the GIFEC delegation with insights into the technological capabilities of the new infrastructure and how it could significantly improve connectivity in areas that currently experience limited or no access to telecommunications services.
Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Rashid Tanko-Computer emphasized that the discussions form part of GIFEC’s broader efforts to expand rural connectivity and strengthen telecommunications services nationwide. According to him, improving the Rural Telephony Project remains a key priority for the Fund as it works to ensure that citizens in underserved and remote communities benefit from reliable digital communication services.
He further noted that enhanced infrastructure and improved network solutions would support the rollout of 3G and 4G services in these communities, thereby enabling greater access to digital opportunities, information services, and socio-economic development.
The engagement at Mobile World Congress highlights GIFEC’s continued commitment to building strategic partnerships with global technology providers in order to accelerate Ghana’s digital transformation agenda. By leveraging innovative telecommunications infrastructure, GIFEC aims to bridge the digital divide and ensure universal access to information and communication technology services across the country.
