Ghana Police Service steps up security in Nkwanta South as Regional Commander leads peace engagement
The Ghana Police Service has intensified efforts to restore calm in the Nkwanta South Municipality as the Oti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Alex Acquah, led a high-level security engagement with residents and community leaders.
In a press release issued and signed by John Nchor, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Public Affairs Officer for the Oti Region said DCOP Acquah was accompanied by senior police officers to Nkwanta, where he first met with police personnel in the area. During the interaction, he urged officers to uphold vigilance, discipline, and professionalism in the discharge of their duties, especially in light of recent security concerns.
As part of the engagement, the Regional Commander led a joint security delegation comprising personnel from the Police, Military, Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), and Defence Intelligence to the Zongo community. There, the team met with the Zongo Chief, Alhaji Issaka Kayaba, and community elders.
The delegation conveyed condolences on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Management Board following the deaths of three adult male residents in recent violent incidents in the municipality. The gesture formed part of efforts to deepen trust and reassure the community of the security agencies’ commitment to protecting lives and property.
In response, the Zongo Chief assured the delegation of the community’s readiness to maintain peace, avoid retaliation, and promote coexistence. The engagement was described as a critical step toward strengthening community relations and ensuring long-term stability in the area.
DCOP Acquah also visited Dadaga, the scene of a previous arson attack that claimed two lives, to assess the situation firsthand and gather updates to inform ongoing security operations.
The Oti Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to closely monitoring developments in the area. Residents have been urged to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with security agencies. Authorities also cautioned against the spread of misinformation and called on all parties to exercise restraint to prevent further escalation of tensions.
