A Ghanaian military position serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon has been struck by missiles amid escalating hostilities in southern Lebanon.

According to a statement from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the Battalion Headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon where Ghanaian troops are stationed came under two missile attacks between 5:45 and 5:52 local time.

The attack is believed to be linked to the ongoing exchanges between the Israel Defense Forces and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that two soldiers sustained critical injuries in the incident, while another soldier suffered trauma. The Officers’ Mess facility at the base was also hit and completely destroyed by fire following the strike.

Military authorities said the injured personnel are currently receiving treatment at a Level One Medical Bunker within the mission area and are in stable condition.

Arrangements are underway to evacuate them to the UNIFIL referral hospital at the mission’s headquarters for further medical care.

The Ghana Armed Forces assured the public that the situation is being closely monitored and urged calm, noting that Ghanaian peacekeepers in the area have taken shelter in underground bunkers for safety.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has formally protested the incident to the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The government also called on all parties involved in the conflict to respect their obligations under international law and ensure the safety and protection of peacekeepers operating under the UN mission.
