One year after the military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians, the nation is commemorating the victims with memorial events and renewed calls to honour their legacy through public service.

The Ghana Air Force helicopter crashed on August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region while carrying government officials and military personnel to Obuasi for an anti-illegal mining engagement. All eight people on board died.

Government has organised a week-long programme to mark the anniversary, including a memorial lecture, an interfaith service, a nationwide blood donation exercise and the unveiling of a cenotaph in honour of the victims. President John Dramani Mahama has also presented support packages to the bereaved families.

The anniversary has also sparked renewed calls for accountability. The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is urging government to provide updates on both the investigation into the helicopter crash and progress in the fight against illegal mining, arguing that tangible results would be the most fitting tribute to those who died while on national duty.
