Ghana sees surge in Toyota Voxy imports
Ghana has witnessed a significant increase in the importation of Toyota Voxy vehicles, with 3,570 units registered in the first two months of 2026, the National Roads and Safety Authority (NRSA) has disclosed.
The NRSA’s technical report, submitted on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, shows that 3,570 Voxy vehicles were registered between January and February, nearly matching the total of 3,687 registered throughout 2025.
Although only 34% of these vehicles are officially registered for commercial use, field observations indicate that many privately registered Voxy vehicles are operating as commercial passenger transport. The NRSA has raised safety concerns regarding this practice.
Official communication from Toyota Tsusho Corporation clarifies that only the HiAce, GranAce, and Coaster models are designed for commercial passenger transport.
The Voxy, the company notes, is intended as a minivan for young, middle-class families. Its ground clearance of 150mm is notably lower than the HiAce’s 185mm, a critical consideration for long-distance travel on Ghanaian roads.
Despite this, some commercial drivers have modified Voxy vehicles with longer struts and larger tyres to offset the lower clearance. The NRSA warns that such modifications compromise road safety, particularly on highways where vehicles face uneven terrain and higher stress.
These safety concerns underpin the NRSA’s decision to ban the Voxy for commercial use.
