Adjen Kotoku Onion market shut down after armed clash

Adjen Kotoku Onion Market

The Adjen Kotoku Onion Market has been temporarily closed after a group of armed individuals, believed to be linked to a rival faction, reportedly invaded the facility in a bid to assert control, leaving several traders injured and heightening security fears.

The disturbance has brought operations at one of Ghana’s major onion trading centres to a halt, with reports also pointing to alleged political involvement in the ongoing dispute over the market’s management.

Spokesperson for the Onion Sellers Association, Mustapha Sulemana Talimu, confirmed the shutdown on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, describing the situation as deeply concerning for traders who rely on the market for their livelihoods.

The incident coincides with reports that onion-laden trucks destined for Ghana have been held up in Nigeria, in what is believed to be a retaliatory move linked to an earlier disagreement involving Ghanaian traders.

Speaking to Class News, Mr Talimu called for immediate government action to prevent the situation from worsening, noting that earlier attempts to resolve the impasse had not been sustained, leading to renewed tensions.

Affected traders are now appealing for enhanced security presence to restore order and ensure the steady flow of onions to markets across the country.
