Demolition begins at Nkawkaw Central Market, traders report theft in Phase 2
Demolition works have commenced at the Nkawkaw Central Market as part of the first phase of a planned reconstruction project, with concerns emerging over theft in other sections of the market.
Heavy machinery moved onto the site earlier today to begin clearing structures in preparation for redevelopment. As sections of the market were pulled down, scrap dealers gathered at the site to collect iron rods, roofing sheets, and other reusable materials from the debris.
Some scrap collectors described the period as a peak business opportunity due to the volume of materials available. They also cautioned individuals not involved in the exercise to stay away from the demolition area to prevent accidents and disruptions.
However, traders operating in phase two of the market have raised concerns about rising theft incidents. According to them, some individuals are taking advantage of the demolition activity to break into shops and steal goods.
The affected traders are calling on authorities and security agencies to increase security presence in the area to safeguard their properties as the reconstruction progresses.
