Ghana signs 23 visa waiver agreements, expands free e-visa access for Africans
President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed that since taking office in 2025, Ghana has signed 23 visa waiver agreements with other countries, a move aimed at promoting regional integration and facilitating travel for Ghanaian citizens abroad.
The announcement was made in the context of a broader policy to introduce a free e-visa regime for all African countries, effective May 25, 2026, to mark Africa Day. Under the new system, African visitors will be able to apply for visas online at no cost, with security measures in place to screen applicants.
President Mahama made the disclosure while delivering closing remarks after bilateral talks with Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa during his state visit to Ghana.
He emphasised that the visa initiatives are designed to promote pan-Africanism, boost tourism, and position Ghana as a more attractive investment destination.
The discussions between the Ghanaian and Zimbabwean delegations also covered key sectors, including energy, trade and investment, tourism, health, agriculture, mining, education, defence and security, media, labour, sports, heritage, archives, and waste management.
To ensure the effective implementation of agreements, President Mahama announced that the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation will meet every two years, supported by regular consultations between the two countries.
The combination of visa waivers and the new free e-visa program signals Ghana’s continued commitment to easing cross-border travel for Africans while enhancing its international economic and diplomatic engagement.
