Kisi Agyebeng calls for constitutional protection for OSP

The Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has raised concern over what he describes as political pressure on the Office of the Special Prosecutor, warning that the institution remains under threat from actors seeking to curtail its mandate.

Addressing participants at a national dialogue on the role of the Special Prosecutor on Tuesday, March 31, he suggested that the office’s survival has, to some extent, depended on the support of John Dramani Mahama, particularly in the face of reports that some lawmakers are considering legislation to abolish it.

He indicated that without such backing, the OSP could have faced dissolution.

Mr Agyebeng further remarked that many politicians view the office as a threat to their interests, making it a frequent target of attempts to weaken its authority.

He stressed that this reality highlights the importance of sustained support from civil society and the wider public to safeguard the institution.

The Special Prosecutor argued that the independence of the office should not hinge on the disposition of any sitting President, advocating instead for stronger constitutional protections to guarantee its continuity and autonomy.

He emphasised the need to build a resilient institution capable of enduring beyond individual administrations, noting that future officeholders should be able to focus on their mandate rather than fighting for the survival of the office.
