The Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad, has issued an apology following a strike that injured three Ghanaian soldiers serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

In an interview on the March 6 incident, he said Israel Defense Forces (IDF) takes full responsibility, describing the strike as a mistake.

“We are very sorry for the incident that took place on the 6th of March,” he said, adding that a formal letter was sent to Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 17 accepting responsibility for the error.

He stated that the strike was not deliberate and rejected claims that Israeli forces intentionally targeted Ghanaian peacekeepers.

The ambassador said the incident occurred during an exchange involving alleged fire from Hezbollah near the Ghanaian contingent’s position.

According to him, Israeli personnel had come under fire from a location about 500 metres from the Ghanaian base, and in responding to the source, the base was hit by mistake.

He further indicated that Israel has raised concerns with UNIFIL authorities about the location of the Ghanaian contingent, describing it as an area where attacks are frequently launched.

He said Israel has requested that the Ghanaian troops be repositioned to another location to reduce risk.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of Ghanaian personnel deployed under UNIFIL.
