KMA spends majority of revenue on waste management, Mayor says
The Mayor of Kumasi, Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has disclosed that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) commits a significant portion of its revenue to waste management.
Speaking during a city clean-up exercise, he said the metropolis generates more than 2,000 tonnes of waste daily, with each tonne costing GH¢83 for disposal and treatment at the Oti Landfill.
He explained that the Assembly also bears the cost of transporting waste, fuelling compactor trucks and machinery, and paying sanitation workers.
The mayor added that the KMA also handles waste from neighbouring municipalities, including Asokwa, Suame, Tafo, Kwadaso, Ejisu and Asokore Mampong, bringing the total daily waste volume to between 6,000 and 8,000 tonnes.
According to him, the situation is placing pressure on the Assembly’s finances and could lead to the Oti Landfill reaching full capacity within three months if no action is taken.
He noted that constructing new landfill cells would cost about €6 million.
Mr Boadi said the Assembly is considering limiting waste disposal from surrounding municipalities at the Oti Landfill as part of efforts to manage the situation.
He also appealed to residents to dispose of waste properly to help reduce the financial burden on the assembly.
