NIA debunks claims on Ghana Card use for financial transactions
The National Identification Authority (NIA) has dismissed reports suggesting that the Ghana Card can now be used to carry out financial transactions, describing such claims as inaccurate and misleading.
In a statement issued on April 8, the Authority clarified that the Ghana Card has not been activated for any form of financial transaction and urged the public to disregard circulating information to the contrary.
“The Ghana Card has not been enabled for financial transaction purposes at this time,” the statement emphasised, advising citizens to rely only on official communication from the NIA for updates.
The Authority, however, acknowledged that ongoing high-level discussions are taking place among policymakers and key stakeholders within Ghana’s financial and regulatory sectors regarding the potential future integration of the Ghana Card into financial systems.
According to the NIA, these engagements form part of broader efforts to expand the use of digital identity and promote financial inclusion across the country. Despite this, the Authority stressed that no final decisions have been reached.
“These deliberations remain inconclusive as of now,” the statement noted.
The NIA assured the public that any future policy direction or rollout involving the Ghana Card’s use for financial transactions will be formally announced through its verified communication channels.
Reaffirming its mandate, the Authority stated its continued commitment to safeguarding the integrity, security, and proper use of Ghana’s National Identification System.
The statement was signed by Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate at the NIA.
