Engineers & Planners emerges top bidder for Damang Mine

News
E&P

Indigenous mining firm Engineers and Planners Company Limited (E&P) has emerged as the highest-scoring bidder for the Damang Mine, securing 93.15 percent in an evaluation conducted by the Tender Review Committee set up by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

The development follows a competitive bidding process involving several firms, including Heath Goldfields Limited and Maripoma Mining Services Limited, which were not approved by the Committee.

Other participants included Vortex Resources Mining Group.

The recommendation marks a significant milestone in determining the future ownership and operation of the Damang Mine, a key gold-producing asset located in Ghana’s Western Region.

Currently operated by Gold Fields Limited through its subsidiary Abosso Goldfields Limited, the Damang Mine has played a vital role in Ghana’s gold output and employment generation.

In recent years, the concession has been under review as part of government efforts to maximise value from the country’s natural resources and ensure transparency and competitiveness in the management of strategic mineral assets.

E&P’s emergence as the top bidder is expected to reignite discussions around local participation in large-scale mining operations, given the company’s growing influence in the extractive sector through contract mining services.

Meanwhile, Gold Fields has also identified E&P as a strong candidate in the transition process.

In a letter dated November 11, 2025, addressed to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the company highlighted E&P’s technical expertise and familiarity with the Damang Mine’s operations.

The correspondence, signed by Managing Director Elliot Twum and copied to Minerals Commission CEO Isaac Tandoh and Gold Fields CEO Mike Fraser, outlined requirements for a smooth transition and future operations.

Gold Fields noted that as the incumbent contractor, E&P possesses the operational experience and institutional knowledge required to sustain production during and after any transition.

If awarded full operational control, Engineers and Planners is expected to demonstrate strong technical and managerial capacity, potentially setting a precedent for increased local participation in Ghana’s mining industry.
