The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) has marked this year’s Safety Week with a strong call for enhanced collaboration and proactive risk management across Ghana’s petroleum sector.

The event, held in Accra under the theme; “Managing Risk Before It Becomes an Incident,” brought together key industry stakeholders, including the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Ghana National Fire Service, to intensify public education on the safe handling of petroleum products.

Delivering the keynote address, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, highlighted the inherent risks associated with petroleum products and stressed the need for continuous vigilance.

He urged industry players to prioritize public education, emphasizing that raising awareness about the safe use of highly inflammable products is critical to preventing accidents and safeguarding lives and property.

Also speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of the NPA, Godwin Tameklo, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to working closely with COMAC and the Tanker Owners Union to strengthen safety standards within the sector.

He disclosed that the NPA will introduce stricter measures, including comprehensive safety checklists, before the registration of fuel tankers to ensure compliance with safety regulations.

The Safety Week initiative forms part of broader efforts by COMAC and its partners to promote environmental safety, reduce risks, and foster a culture of prevention within the petroleum industry.

COMAC expressed optimism that sustained collaboration and public sensitisation will significantly reduce incidents and improve safety outcomes across the sector.
